Russia has no choice than to kill them, unless they surrender. Ukrainian POWs are treated with respect by Russians, but not the other way around. In fact Ukraine does not hesitate to kill those Ukrainians who are willing to surrender or have surrendered.
In January Ukraine used a Patriot missile (which supposedly is in short supply) to shoot down a Russian cargo plane transporting 65 Ukrainians POWs to be exchanged somewhere in the Kharkov / Belgorod area. We can only speculate the motive for this inhuman act, but it was a part and parcel of the palace intrigue in Kiev, because General Zaluzhny, a vastly popular commander, was sacked by Zelensky along with other military leaders pretty much the same time.
