Lost in the Fifties- Another Time, Another Place

1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Equipment - 1957 Mercury …

As much as I liked the Fifties, I did not like the social atmosphere.Very regimental, full of snobs and very strict with any social encounters.

Up through the 50s, cars were still elegant. Although the 20s & definitely the 30s were the cat’s ass.

There are some great cars from the Sixties, the GS 400 (1967), the 1962 Thunderbird, The road runner and naturally the Corvette,. My first car was a 1956 Rambler with a straight 6 cylinder. I drove that car until it died!

Yeah, people were not big on murdering the unborn. Dad worked; mom ran the house. Too much stability.

As you trash the country.

Flat head 6; I had one. Bought it at Reedmans for $15. They were going to scrap it.

I’m a boomer who broke his back running pipe for 35+ years. Everyone’s an individual. I paid my dues in spades.

I have two friends ( superb mechanics ) who have maybe 35 antique - classic cars in storage. They told me they know they’ll never have time to restore them all; but they took the most important first step; they kept them safe. The 32 Dodge ( straight 8 ) needs some serious restoration; but that engine was only offered for 2 years. The old boy who sold them the 32 Packard Hearse, made one stipulation; when he died, they had to take him to the cemetery in it. THEY DID.

The comment was directed at Kent.

Most boomers have excellent work ethics and work hard. Their children another story.

My younger years I went the circuit of the military and then auto manufacturing. Pretty much hated the union atmosphere. Decided to move into the communications field and went to college. Took forever without student loans and the management.

Found I didn’t;t agree with the politics of business and int my own way. Can’t say it was easy until I let everyone go and now continue as a sole proprietor. Problem is as I get older, I really find that I am about done and am ready for retirement. Body is no longer willing.

This was the old boy: Morrison said Baran’s funeral procession was led by a 1932 Packard hearse that was part of Baran’s extensive antique automobile collection. See the source image

I ruined my joints doing industrial pipe fitting. When you need 8 people to hang one length of pipe, you shouldn’t be doing it. But the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ I could not turn down. Money gone but the arthritic fringe benefits remain.

I feel you pain and have had the surgeries to continue walking.

Amazing how we are indestructible at that age.

The first Chevy V-8s (1955) really sucked. My hometown’s police department bought a fleet of them. A few months later, you could recognize a police car from blocks away simply from the rattling of the engine. The 265cid engines were crap. When the 283cid engines came out in '57…Chevy had “got it right” so to speak.

My experience was opposite. In my neighborhood, there were no snobs among my friends. We all played together, nobody locked their doors at night, nobody stole your bicycle if you left it laying in the front yard…and little regimentation that I can remember. We did have to go to school, but that was about it.

My old CJ ( & I curse myself for selling it ) had a 283 & a Warner Stone Crusher transmission. Pull trees down. Double roll cage & full harness. Two winches & wide track spider hubs, stainless 1/2 barrel fuel tank.

People write there was no Pink 1959 Cadillac, but my father bought one…There was one with the color Persian Sands…this must be it but the one we had was much pinker. We had it for years. Not the mandala effect Persian Sands must have faded to Pink
