The Rabbit Hole

Which was precisely my original point, but I got the density argument from you and asar, so my question was sarcastic / rhetorical. That was what I said in my first post on the subject, you disputed it, I countered your dispute and now you present me with exactly the same thing I stated.

Ok, it was this sentence which was a bit disjointed, but I see more clearly what you saying now. :kissing_heart:

Sod that! :joy: I donā€™t do any shovelling, not snow, not dog poo!

When you feel like it, maybe you can help me figure out why longer skis are faster. PH says it is to do with the pressure melting the ice, so surely more pressure means more melting means faster? Then how comes if I put on longer skis I go faster as the pressure would be more spread out and less at any one point?

The main answer is I donā€™t know. If you refer back to my post with the skating info ā€¦ the speed skaters do the same and use hugely long skate-blades. So long that I wonder how they get around the corners, and they definitely are doing a lot of foot-shuffling to negotiate a corner. I also notice that they tend to drag the inside hand and initially suspected that was just to make them feel safer, however Iā€™m wondering whether it is a technique to introduce a rotating moment.

I have wondered whether it is the physical characteristics of the ice and a longer blade == more cornering force because the ice gives way under a shorter blade attempting the same speed.

So back to long skis. Outside the box suggestion is that you are actually floating on an air cushion. The longer the ski the less the air-pressure in the cushion giving you a slightly higher ride-height, and therefore less interference with the snow/ice surface and consequently less drag.

Do you wax your skis? ā€¦and does it make any performance difference or is the wax simply protecting the ski material?

Oh heck yes. That is most important. Skis have to be well waxed. Each waxing lasts about a week of use and it helps to top it up with a spray often too. After every season skis go in for a full service of sharpening the edges and a proper hot wax. So yes, well waxed skis are faster! The wax isnā€™t really for any protection as it is only the underside that gets waxed.

There are two types of riders out there:

  • Those who have been in a wreck.
  • Those who have not been in a wreck, yet.

Lol, so motorbiking is more dangerous than skiing!

For me it was. A small part of me used to enjoy wiping out on Hogadon Mountain at 50mph. I absolutely hated the three bike wrecks I was in at less than 35mph. lol

:joy: How so noble of him. I couldnā€™t last 30 seconds with a libtard. Somehow, I think his idealism will wane as his experience with reality grows.

I know, but the bit that interested me was that at this early age, he could tell the Democrats and the liberals were lying to him and that they were factually clueless

Iā€™m not convinced that snow melts under a moving ski as it does under a skate blade. I think it tumbles and possibly some flakes are broken into smaller piecesā€¦and friction increases with increase in applied pressureā€¦to an upper limit with compaction.
