Maybe you do not realize that the POTUS draws advice from a wide body of experts… not just the ones that your ideological sources choose to quote in their ignorance. You think that all decisions should be based on ONLY military and intelligence factors? Ahh… yes…of course…low information people would not know that “War is the continuation of policy by/with other means” [Clausewitz] and therefore those military advisors are only cogs in a bigger wheel of international politics that involves other many other factors.
You see… a leader must integrate information that a single domain expert - such as an Intelligence expert or Military expert - cannot.

My father was with OSS 101 ( Burma ) during WW2. They never took a prisoner. It was called war. Actually the British & Americans did take prisoners; but Gurkha troops were in charge of prisoners, so, no prisoners.
