Why would it have been necessary to āset a dateā at some point, instead of just announcing that we would be leaving; and that the Afghan army needed to get up to speed soon, to take our place?
And why was our allowing the Taliban to take over the country the only alternative to our having a āperpetual presenceā there? (This is a standard liberal talking point.)
Because the government was a western creation, it was a given that it wouldnāt stand. Now nobody thought it would fold or run away in a week or two, that caught everyone by surprise. But the Taliban was going to control Afghanistan or the US was going to maintain a permanent presenc, and the later was unacceptable to most Americansā¦.
As to setting the date, you have to, you canāt just have Afghanistan wake up one morning to find that the last US soldier left during the nightā¦ That would be certain disaster. And one of the most dangerous military operations is retreating. The Taliban had to know what we were doing when and agree to NOT attack the retreating forcesā¦ā¦

Americans began to be told in March that they could be removed.
