Nothing gigantic is going to happen as a consequence of this. The US might be evicted from Iraq, but that may have happened either way. Frankly, we don’t want to be there anymore anyway, so let them kick us out. It’s fine.
That’s the worst thing really. Iran doesn’t have leverage elsewhere. What are they going to do? Launch rockets at the Gulf, Israel, US assets? None of that is catastrophic, and Iran getting into a conventional confrontation isn’t where they want to be, broadly speaking. US/Gulf/Israel can do much more to Iran than Iran can do to them. And the more they openly attack, their political sympathies will increasingly dry. Especially if they do something stupid like attack shipping through the Gulf.
Their only good option is to try pushing the US out of Iraq. Beyond that, their options are mediocre to bad.

Unfortunately, this was my first thought as well. Or he was cut a deal that the impeachment nonsense would cease. In either case, this seems like a move that was not consistent with what Trump has been saying or doing for his entire candidacy and presidency.

Except as usual, Trump was wrong. Obama sponsored the JCPOA which brought peace between the US and Iran.

If Iran had killed such a high level US military leader, how would the US perceive the attack?
