I think it was more over secession than slavery. Though the slave states wanted to secede and form separate country, the war was not to end slavery. As I recall, the first shot was fired on a Union fort.
A few years back my son and I was pulling out of a Kroger parking lot and on the right side standing was a family of 4. Man, woman and two kids holding a sign that read they needed money for food. The light was red so we sat there for a few. I asked my son did he think these people were for real or just trying to scam others into coughing up money.
My son looked at me and said he thought they were for real but you never really know. He went on to say give them some money and if they are faking it then God will deal with it latter. I handed my son a 20 and he gave it to the woman.
She started crying and said thanks.
The problem I have with these types of stories are, its not realistic, there are more scammers out there and its not recorded as how do you prove they are scamming unless you are a investigating reporter.
there are stories of these people who have been exposed as scammers and this is their way of earning money by pulling on the heart strings.
Ive never given a homeless person money, I will buy them food and if they refuse it then I suspect they are probably scammers ,most hungry people will not refuse a free meal or a warm coat/clothing.
I have volunteered my time at a shelter to serve meals and you want to see grateful people who are truly hungry go to a shelter that serves hot meals and you will see real hungry people and how grateful they are
Those that beg on the street brining kids, pets and such are awful people
I totally agree…“the problem with these stories are…”
It’s an never-ending problem within the problem itself. I mean, there are people who are out there that are continuing to cause the problem, by scamming others. Instead of fixing the problem. They mostly want to “get in on the action”. Because some think no one will bother to investigate them or their illicit scams.
As my son said. If they are faking it then God will take care of it latter.
I’ve sometimes given money knowing that there is only a small chance they are genuine. It is a choice. That’s all. I dont fear being ripped off. The government has already bent me over a barrel and does that to me every paycheck. I’m used to it.
I still give every once in a while. If I think they are sincere I will give them a few dollars, but I won’t go out of my way.
I had the misfortune of having lived in Memphis. On every street corner someone is standing begging for money. At the drive throughs people stand where you place your order begging for money. They are quite rude down there as well. Refuse to give them money and they get all bent out of shape.
I carried my Sig everywhere I went in Memphis. Had to pull it several times warding off beggars that got out of hand. At stop signs or red lights they would walk right up to your car begging.
Used to live in the Washington DC area. Every Metro stop had to deal with em. Usually when they are en masse, I walk by.
Exactly. I will provide food, water, diapers, an occasional ride etc but I will never give cash to beggars.
You’re not supposed to give them food. Apparently, they want underwear and socks, a toothbrush and toothpaste.
Back when I was forced to show up in downtown Atlanta, several if us noticed a particular late model Mercedes that would habitually drop off panhandlers at 5 of the busiest pedestrian intersections in the area every morning and pick them up in the evening.
Being smokers forced to go outside to smoke, we had a somewhat regularly scheduled view of the neighborhood bums.
