Live round(s) fired in Hong Kong, water cannon deployed.
Similar coverage on the BBC website.

That often happens when a cop is assaulted…

“Police told local media that the gunshot was fired as a warning to protesters, and that several officers had been taken to the hospital as a result of the clashes.”

Hong Kong Bombshell

Carrie Lam agrees to withdraw “the bill” !

Reported today on the British Brainwashing Corporation. A motion for complete withdrawal of the bill is to be put before the Assembly at the next session in October. This is a massive climb-down for the Politicos and Beijing.

Also reported was that the protests have gone on for so long that the protesters’ demands have broadened to include and inquisition into the police brutality during the protests.

So maybe not the end after all … we shall know this weekend

I wonder what SunTzu would think of the Hong Kong protests. Has the CCP given the Hongkongers a way to retreat? History is never certain especially in a country, where according to the HSBC bank ad campaign a new millionaire is created every five minutes. In the mid 80’s when siberian coal miners went on strike, because they had nothing to lose. the Soviet Union’s ruling elite struggled to supply them, I was in Vienna at the time doing my best to profit from forbidden “technology transfer” to the Comecon countries, and overload the system. Everyone in Vienna in Import & Export was racing to sell any kind of supplies and amenities destined for Siberia, that would be lost to corruption along the way. Back even then many spoke of they will be crushed by tanks and there was good president for it East Germany 1953. Yet, yet even though Hong Kong has fallen behind from its place as China’s leading economic powerhouse at the time of the hand over. An invasion only looks good on paper, and would be a pyrrhic show of force, but a definite financial disaster.

Hong Kong is not a crisis, but a dilemma. the farmer and worker paradise China must set an example of counter revolutionaries, yet different than Tiananmen square if it does escalate it will inevitably awaken historical, cultural and biological resentiment hat would make it impossible to conduct business in a post invasion Hong Kong for long. The pawn sacrifice of Tiananmen Square to keep the elite ruling a while longer, will not work for Hong Kong, and it is really hard to go back to the Soviet post war strategy of replacement for East Prussia, after such great memes. Sadly there isn’t much left in the Communist playbook to regain authority and legitimacy. I wonder if Jack Ma’s proletarian truth taunts at the Shanghai Conference of Elon Musk and his dreams of Mars and space, will be remembered like Khrushchev leapfrog and ash heap taunts to the west, the last flicker of the Torch of socialism, just before the last sovok realized that they are not really ascending into space. Hong Kong is a real dilemma, not a crisis. Like the old saying goes
“the Emperor rides on a tiger, yet is afraid to get off”

that they suspended the protests today for 9-11 says a great deal about them.

They deserve our support.

Do not underestimate the power of fear. The main thrust of protest is now the behaviour of the police. If that behaviour deteriorates, or worse morphs into a Gestapo or Stasi-like operation, the protests will quietly subside. Time and the determination of the CCP will reveal the end-game.

As for the financial element; watch for the growth of Shanghai to replace or supplant Hong Kong. There are more millionaires in Shanghai than any other city in the world. Shanghai has the potential to become the Eastern equivalent of London.

Pyrrhic … more like an unexpected amputation of a toe.

With one correction on your last part about Shanghai! It won’t be Shanghai it will be Shenzhen that will replace Hong Kong as the financial hub! It’s been in the works for quite some time!
