This has been debated over a century and clearly there are myriad of opinions on exactly what that means. But creation of programs that ensure the most basic of needs, is paramount as the other needs that so many have no problem supporting are moot if one hasn’t sufficient food and shelter to begin with. Even to be a first world country, the citizenry surely has to be properly fed and housed.

Entitlement programs are not designed to create dependency on the Government only as a temporary measure until people needing help are able to work again!

For the purpose of promoting the general welfare. General welfare is the most basic of needs.

That’s pure crap, “Human Rights” are determined by men, written by men, and enforced by men.

Christ no where in the bible tells us that everyone is entitled to free healthcare.

Christian Charity is a gift of the heart, nothing is taken by force from one to provide for another.

They laid out exactly what the congress was empowered to “provide for” in the taxing and spending clause.

Article 1: S8

To borrow money on the credit of the United States;

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;

The specific Powers to promote the general welfare are the enumerated Powers.

“General welfare” grants no authority to spend.

And as I said, that’s subjective having been debated now widely, about from the beginning, with nothing like a consensus…:man_shrugging:

Progressives act like disagreements on things like about where the nation should do its checking amount to substantive disagreements about things which were not in contention until numerable decades later.

I marvel at the ideology that basically acts as though the Modern Court, beginning in the 1930s, somehow were the ones to be faithful to uphold the Constitution and free it from the lawlessness that had restrained it for well over a century!

What a splendid thing this: that apostasy and faithlessness comes first and integrity and fidelity last.
