The goal was always AQ, Taliban were just an appetizer. With AQ out of the way Taliban aren’t a threat to us.

No the US doesn’t want them released, the release is one of the conditions insisted on by the Taliban as part of the peace process.
The occupation of Europe and Japan went on for decades following WWII and US troops have remained in large numbers in both since the official ending of the occupations.
Well that cetainly isn’t true. It’s very hard to distinguish where AQ ends and The Taliban begins.
Odds are very high that within 3 years Afghanistan will again become a haven for groups like Al Qaeda.
That wouldn’t be our fault after all the time, money and lives lost. What would we have to do to make the Afganis competent enough to take AQ on by themselves.
