I got your number didn’t I?
Sounds like the opposite is true and I in fact got yours.
Yes, you win.
The end game is a wall. Everything else is simply partisan politics and a means to an end. While Trump haters remain focused on the shutdown, the real action is just beginning.
You seriously expect me to answer those questions? I wasn’t consulted and neither were you. Just because Trump didn’t personally share his plans with you, doesn’t me he doesn’t have any. But I guess TDS will do that to a person.
Did you know what the Tax Plan was before it was voted on? Did you know what the various ACA repeal and replacement bills that were voted on were?
I think this is part of the problem that Trump is having in getting his money - he has not laid out exactly what it is for.
The problem is Pelosi. She has some serious TDS and it is severely impairing her ability to lead.
True - but all presidents face opposition. McConnel and Boehner didn’t work with Obama.
I just think if Trump would release a real plan about the wall, he could garner public support, and that could - if the plan is appealing - force Pelosi to the table.
As is, it’s all just vagaries and rhetoric, and frankly, no one really knows what he wants to do with the money.
The $5 billion President Trump demanded for border wall construction would build 215 miles of new or replacement barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border, averaging a staggering $23.3 million per mile.
The 215 miles the Trump administration says it could build would be split among four sectors of the border. The Rio Grande Valley area of Texas would be the top priority, followed by eastern California and western Arizona, and then Laredo, Texas.
“We know where we would go next, and this is based on field commanders’ input,” a Homeland Security official said last week while briefing reporters on the administration’s request.
But only about 100 of the 215 miles would be new locations.
The rest would be a replacement for outdated barriers in some areas or added layers to back up the border fence.
Officials say they have given Congress a full blueprint but have refused to make it public.
Kind of flies in the face of those who claim he has no plan.
As DMK points out in her post, there is a plan out there. I’m somewhat familiar with the plan, but decided not to bring it into our conversation.
The key point here is that without Pelosi this gets done. There are more than a handful of moderate DEMs who will compromise. Unfortunately, that is a moot point if Pelosi doesn’t allow anything with a wall to make it to the House floor.
As I stated previously, Pelosi alone is responsible. Nothing will sway her. She really hates Trump that much.
Do you actually think for a second president Trump would care what Goodell had to say about ANYTHING ?
Are you in the right thread???
YES !! From OP ………………
Oops!!!
Thanks for that.
So 100 miles of new wall, and 115 miles of wall replacing fence and other barriers.
I find that to be reasonable.
Of course, I’d like to hear more directly from people who have studied the proposal and not just read an article, but I bet a compromise is reached here.
I wonder why it costs so much - 23M a mile? It really doesn’t look like all that much in terms of construction, if that pic is what they are building.
Why wouldn’t you bring it into the conversation? Now that DMK provided an article that summarizes the administrations goals, we can discuss it. Without it, we are arguing about nothing.
And re: ‘without pelosi this gets done’ - why didn’t it get done with Paul Ryan and a GOP majority in the house?
Also, why didn’t trump spend all the border security money he was given lat year?
And why isn’t trump broadcasting this reasonable (in my estimation) plan at every step?
Our discussion centered on whether or not Trump caved. Details regarding Trump’s plans for the wall funding weren’t relevant to that conversation.
I really don’t have an interest in dissecting the minutia surrounding the wall plans.
In regards to your other points regarding the GOP majority, you are simply regurgitating LW talking points. A super majority in the Senate was required then, as it is now. So let’s not rehash that stuff. It’s water under the bridge.
In regards to the money not being spent, the legislation makes it clear that the money can’t be spent on a border wall. So once again you are simply regurgitating LW talking points.
My point remains. This whole process will center on Pelosi’s willingness to let bipartisan legislation with wall funding reach the House floor. I’m betting she will double down on her no-wall funding position.
and Trump still caved in, if he was a man of his word he would have stuck it out, and since he doesn’t understand how the Senate works, he could have forced the Democrats hands at the expense of the 800K workers
Except that the senate still does not have a super majority.
So even if Nancy let’s it pass the house, there is no garuntee it will pass the senate.
Which is why you believe Paul Ryan never sent anything over.
So nothing has hanged on that front.
And I think the details on the wall are very important. I’m much more optimistic about a compromise knowing that trump is asking for 100 miles of new fence. I thought he was looking for much more. Not to thrilled with the cost per mile int hat article, but still…
I believe it is a matter of perspective.
Here is an analogy highlighting my position.
Super Bowl. Team 1 quarterback confidently states that he will throw two touchdown passes to win the game. He is only able to throw a single touchdown pass, but they still win the game.
History will not focus on the quarterback’s failure to throw two touchdown passes. History will focus on the win.
In that same vein, history will focus on whether or not Trump is able to get his wall. It won’t focus on whether or not he supposedly caved on the government shutdown.
