US Naval Update Map - April 6 2019

The Naval Update Map shows the approximate current locations of U.S. Carrier Strike Groups (CSGs) and Amphibious Ready Groups (ARGs), based on available open-source information. No classified or operationally sensitive information is included in this weekly update. CSGs and ARGs are the keys to U.S. dominance over the world’s oceans. A CSG is centered on an aircraft carrier, which projects U.S. naval and air power and supports a Carrier Air Wing (CVW). The CSG also includes significant offensive strike capability. An ARG is centered on three amphibious warfare ships, with a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) embarked. An MEU, in turn, is built around a heavily reinforced and mobile battalion of Marines.

Carrier Strike Groups

  • The USS Abraham Lincoln is underway in the Atlantic Ocean for a scheduled deployment.
  • The USS John C. Stennis is underway in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOR) in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region.
  • The USS Harry S. Truman is underway in the Atlantic Ocean for a sustainment exercise.

Amphibious Ready Groups/Marine Expeditionary Units

  • The USS America is underway in the Pacific Ocean for routine training.
  • The USS Wasp is underway in the South China Sea while participating in exercise Balikatan 2019.
  • The USS Kearsarge is underway in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region.

The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group left Norfolk on April 1, part of a globetrotting tour that will sail through the 5th, 6th, 7th and 3rd Fleet areas of responsibility before arriving at the flattop’s new California homeport, Naval Air Station North Island.

Great first post @NAVY keep this up! The movement of our CSGs, ARGs, and MEUs can provide a window into events to come.

LHD 1 in the South China Sea will likely result in China sending comparable vessels to the region as a show of force.
