The background story of Ernest Shackleton’s exploration to Antarctica which turn from expedition to survival.
I was fascinated by the adventures and competition between Scott and Amundsen to reach the South Pole first.
At the same time, I was saddened by the fact the English were poorly prepared which led to their deaths.
Of course Shackleton wanted to be there first. Once that dream was not to be, he chose more difficult and challenging goals.
The irony that Shackleton’s ship was named the “Endurance” was something he and his captain needed in order to survive this ordeal, endurance! Quite a remarkable story of survival and the fact he was able to save all his men is a true testament to Shackleton’s humanity!
Scott, on the other hand, caused the death of 5 of his expedition members, including himself.
Poor planning, lack of proper preparations, bad last minute decision-making…
All of the above. The exact opposite of what the Norwegians did.
I have to be honest I don’t know a lot about their stories. Do you have a favorite documentary that you can recommend?
Shackleton on the other hand actually returned to St George and died of a heart attack where his body remains to this day which was at the request of his wife that he be buried there.
