I’ll tell her you have transitioned.
How the hell did you get your achilles better in that short time usually they are super stubborn.
I broke my back many years ago in a car accident (f*cking dangerous things those cars ) and usual BS in the hospital, we won’t know if you will walk again. We won’t know for a few days as it takes time for the nerves in the spine to do whatever they are going to do, bla bla bla.
Any way 3 months on my back everything worked out ok. Here I am 25 years later and I felt something go when I was training. The hospital assumes it’s connected to the past injury but I’m not convinced. Just had a 6 months with the physio and no improvement, so I am going to the gym to sort it.
I am not going to take anti inflammatory medicines , I’m going for a natural solution…

Yes I am relieved my achilles is better. It feels pretty normal now, though I know it will still be too weak to run on. I was hobbling for 3-4 days and getting down the stairs was difficult. I didn’t do anything other than use a compression bandage.
I think your back problem is probably related to your past injury too. Scar tissue is never as strong as the original and can be a bit haphazard in its formation. I think you are doing the right thing strengthening that area as muscles can compensate for a lot. I would also take curcumin which is a natural anti inflammatory and that would make it feel better. Take enough though; I would suggest 750mg a day.
This may not be the case as you felt something go, but I think I will mention it anyway and it’s worth bearing in mind for the future. When joints have suffered trauma they can be more prone to arthritic conditions in years to come. That bit is well known. But why?
Autophagy is a recent discovery and won the Nobel prize for medicine in 2016. It literally means self eating. Your body needs a certain amount of protein each day to replace blood cells, tissue repair etc. It normally gets it from food plus recycling old proteins by breaking them down into the constituent amino acids. Now the recycling part doesn’t really need to be that efficient if there is a constant stream of new protein coming in. However, if you were to stop eating, it would be a different story. Your needs for protein remain the same, so the body ups the ante on the recycling, hunting down junk proteins, tumours, bacteria, viruses - everything that is surplus and breaks them down into amino acids for re-use. Degenerative diseases like arthritis and dementia in the brain are all due to excess junk proteins. There may be more leftover proteins hanging around connective and soft tissue if the area has suffered trauma and subsequent rapid repair.
How do you know you are in a state of autophagy? How long do you need to fast to achieve it? When your blood glucose level in relation to your ketone level is at 1.5:1 you are around the start. Around 0.7:1 and you are doing very well. You can get buy blood tests for glucose and also ketones. However, I think it is worth bearing in mind that your glycogen stores in your liver and muscles can hold about 1700 calories, so you should get through all that within 24 hours if you don’t eat anything. By the way, for those who aren’t sure, ketones is a source of energy released from your fat stores.
Did you know that also during fasting growth hormone increases by 2000%?! The presence of growth hormone ensures you don’t lose muscle mass. Your body won’t start to burn the muscles until after about 4 days of fasting.
No wonder…

You probably have a fast healing ability due to general fitness / training for many years.
That all makes sense, it is still possible that the original injury to my back is manifesting itself causing some problems.
The longest I have fasted was 36 hours and it is quite easy especially drinking the crazy guys snake juice (water with various electrolytes).
I understand the back joints/bones are the slowest healing in the body due to blood flow. My thinking is that intense gym work will certainly get blood and testosterone flowing well. I can only try it for a few months and see.
I think there is a store in Norwich that sells African / Indian herbs and ■■■■■■■ I want to buy curcumin in edible powder form and control what I am taking each day with my foods. I saw the discussion you were having on here the other day and I think I will take turmeric also ?
The active compound you want is curcuminoids. Curcumin is about 3% of turmeric and contains the highest level of curcuminoids by far. Taking pure turmeric won’t do anything in the quantity that you could manage.
I would definitely focus on building the muscles in that area. Have you tried yoga? That is good for core strength and flexibility.
I will have do some reading on curcumin / curcuminoids and turmeric as I don’t really know much about them.
I will focus on gym training first because although I haven’t stepped into one for over 20 years it will still be quite natural to me. I joined the local gym yesterday.
I haven’t tried yoga nor even looked into it so more studying for me this week
Speaking of that, I am switching from Turmeric to CUR-Q10 with 1000mg curcumin per dose. I’ve just about convinced myself that the Turmeric is the culprit behind my aching neck muscles. It’s either that or the pillow I’ve been using.
It may be coincidence, but since I’ve stopped using Turmeric, the neck muscles seem to have relaxed.
@asaratis ss
This is why I will need to do some reading this week. The write up on these states :
- Features a potent 1,330 mg dose of turmeric standardized to 95% curcuminoids: A 95% standardization of curcuminoids is one of the highest amounts achievable and is far superior to other forms of curcumin which are often standardized to 50% or less.
This suggests to me the curcuminoids are coming from the Turmeric not the curcumin
I think what you were taking before was too small a dose. It may have similar effect if you took more. This seems a good dose.
The compound in natural turmeric which contains the highest concentration by far of curcuminoids is curcumin. Curcumin is 3% of turmeric. Curcumin contains 77% curcuminoids. Whatever they have done to it, you want to be taking 500-1000mg of curcuminoids a day. Most good curcumin capsules are standardised to 95% curcuminoids, not 50%. Make sure it also has black pepper extract (bioperine) as that helps absorption. I have also heard that turmeric oil aids absorption. I have tried it but it is so hard going, I gave up.
One trick I use with my neck when I lie down to sleep.
If my neck feels ‘wrong’ (tense or achy), lying on my back I arrange my pillow under the curve of my neck and the top of my shoulders, with my head slightly off the bed surface, or at least partly so. This tends to naturally stretch my neck as the weight of my head acts like a lever against the pillow, exerting just a little stretching. You have to experiment with positioning the pillow until everything feels comfortable.
I find it works wonders.
Turmeric is the best natural source of curcumin. It’s just not all curcumin. A small percentage of it is curcumin. The 95% curcumin extracts come from turmeric but it takes a shitload of it to make a ounce of 95% grade.
I did my 10k bike around the course this morning. Well I did about 20k in all, 10 round trip to start /finish point. The going was too bloody soft and lumpy, I took a wrong turn and had to avoid running over some stupid dogs including my own. My time was 35:46; the winning time (runner) was 35:11. Garmin gave me a 3.7/5 on effort. I usually get 5/5 when pushing it running. Have to try again.
I watched this last night and found it really interesting. The teams could choose whatever order they wanted - all of them chose the men to do the 1st and last laps except Poland, who had the men run the 1st and 2nd, then women to run 3rd and final. This is incredible because you normally only ever see athletes’ times, never men racing women!
