Haha that’s the kid of montage that Hugh Dennis does on mock the week, rather clever me thinks.
Nerds do it for me! I do have a problem with imperial though. Other than miles which I get, it has to be SI units!
It has been known for the Queen to hide from some certain dignitaries she has had to meet.
Why not without an engine? It’s brakes you need!
The last line of the bottom photo is cropped off. If you click on the photo, you’ll see it.
Be I not mistaken, “foot” is an English term…defined by the length of the King’s.
You blokes did nothing more than cause me to maintain two sets of tools. Any Engineer worth two ounces of salt can deal with any unit whatsoever as long as it’s defined…and there’s a conversion table available.
We use the metric system where it really counts…MATH and MONEY.
Advantages of the English System
For any of you familiar with SI, you probably know that the English system of measurements holds few advantages. So why hasn’t the U.S. converted? The primary advantage to hanging on to the English system is cost of conversion. For example, in 2009, NASA stated that the conversion of the space shuttle program to SI would cost $370 million. This was a price tag for which NASA simply did not have the funds. In another example, when Great Britain began to process for metrification in the 1990s, the estimated cost for changing all of its road signs was the equivalent of between $1.5 and $1.8 billion.
(However, mechanics having to deal with both has done the hand tool manufacturer’s a great favor…the fasteners makers too.)
…and you likely report your weight in stones to keep the numbers lower!
No I report my weight in kgs. If you dig hard enough somewhere above, you might see that I did.
I don’t care much whether imperial is English or not. I know that it is, but we didn’t learn imperial in school and none of it makes logical sense. 1 kg of water is 1 litre, boils at 100 deg c, freezes at zero. Can’t be more logical than that. Our shops have to all use metric but because it is the government, road signs are still in miles and yards. WTF is a yard, is a foot, is an inch? Sod all that. We should be in km like the rest of Europe. Now I believe that is something the EU should have enforced!
This is something the UK should enforce
I was just “digging”. Your weight is not my concern, except that I want you to be healthy. Obese is bad. Anorexia nervosa is worse.
That is quite logical and I agree. Having measurements relate to one another by decimals only is quite simple to understand…and quite easy to express on paper. What cold make a unit of small measurement more simple that defining it as ONE TENTH of the next larger unit of the same characteristic.
I read a very good article on units of measurement not too many years ago. I’ll search for it.
BTW, one cause for my occasional nerdness is that I have nothing but time on my hands.
1 Millennium = 1000 years
1 Century = 100 years
1 Decade = 10 years
Then, it gets squirrelly.
1 Year = 12 months
1 Day = 24 hours
1 Hour = 60 minutes
1 Minute = 60 seconds
…get any smaller and it goes back to metric…with exception of mechanical stopwatches…they were limited by speed of the movement to 1/5 second. You can get a good one today for about $500.00 = £385.00 (today)
…and a better one for $779.99 = £600.59 (today)
If only European countries had the same sense
I report my weight in kilos because hardly anybody in the UK knows what it means.
So tell me then. I promise I won’t know if you’re a fat git or not!
@robgsxr, @asaratis Mountain bike down the Streif! Well worth watching “Streif, one hell of a ride” to see what those guys go through. It’s the toughest downhill in the world.
For a minute there I thought he’d frozen his sideburns.
Never thought I would say it but I would prefer skiing the course than what this nutter is doing
So tell me then. I promise I won’t know if you’re a fat git or not!
Hey! I have a mirror for that
