During the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami (referred to as the Boxing Day Tsunami in some English-speaking countries) over 100,000 people were killed in Sumatra alone while none of the towns and villages throughout the Indian Ocean rim (Thailand, Sri Lanka, Somalia, etc) had any sirens and such warning facilities (as far as I know) installed.
Of course many Europeans who were Germans and Swedes vacationing in Thailand had no idea what a tsunami was, and when the water first receded, some of them walked toward the receded ocean on now exposed seabed to collect clams and shellfish.
Japanese on the other hand know very well what a tsunami is (BTW the word tsunami is Japanese, meaning āharbor waveā and thus is not entirely correct), and know the first warning sign of an oncoming big tsunami is the receding ocean.
However, this knowledge wonāt help you at all if a tsunami comes in the middle of the night, as tsunamis are silent until they hit the land.
What was shocking even for the Japanese was the 1960 earthquake in Chile and subsequent tsunami that destroyed the northeast coast of Japan (the same area that was destroyed in 2011) during the night. The waves traveled at the speed of a jet plane, reaching the shores of Japan in about 10 hours from Chile.
The Japanese government subsequently installed sirens and loudspeakers all along the coasts of Japan. But you can see in the videos from 2011 that people were walking on the streets nonchalantly and minding their business while the sirens were blaring and officials telling people to evacuate.
What happened was, after the local authorities had been issuing advisories, warnings and sounding sirens even for a very minor tsunami of a few inches, people got tired of official warnings and started to ignore them.
Tsunamiās are no joke, and what I find most compelling in all of this, is the fact no sirens were used. It was as if they purposely planned this event.
The children are still missing. Where did they go? Same with Ukraine. 60+ thousand children missing and no body is talking about that.

What can you tell us about the latest development on Japanās decision to start dumping their radioactive water into the Ocean? My wife is pretty upset about this as are many of her Chinese friends who are from Yan Tai and Qingdao. What are your thoughts about this? Are there going to be any planned protests about this?
The two countries that should be protesting most noisily are the US and Russia, because the ocean current off the coast of Fukushima flows toward their territories.
But they are silent about it or at least are not making a lot of noise.
What goes around, comes around. Itās a problem for the entire world, and the IAEA shouldnāt have given Japan a nod. (Itās a corrupt organization anyway)
