I learned tonight that in addition to Swiss Authorities impounding stricken US aircraft during the Second World War, both US and German pilots found themselves dog fighting the Swiss. In addition, scores of accidental bombings took place on Swiss cities resulting in the loss of life and destroyed cities. The US in 1949 apologised to the Swiss with a multi-million dollar settlement.
Being a former pilot, I know how easy it is to get lost especially in IFR conditions. I am so surprised as the the quantity of Swiss cities that were bombed.
Keeping neutrality is a costly business.
I was told in 1970s (by a German who lived in Switzerland) that the Swiss pilots had to know their geography like the back of their hands and were trained to navigate their aircraft through the valleys without any visibility (by fog, cloud or night). A chilling thought.
