Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren celebrate Amazon canceling New York headquarters

So the taxpayer pays to hold the knife to their throats because they aren’t sexy enough for the politicians?

In 1992, when Southern states were hemorrhaging tens of thousands of textile jobs, BMW received $130 million in tax incentives from South Carolina that transformed the 30-mile I-85 corridor between Greenville and Spartanburg from Textile Mill Central to Leipzig South.

61,500 South Carolinians work in the auto manufacturing industry today.

In 1993, Alabama offered the then-unbelievable amount of $250 million in incentives to Mercedes-Benz to build a plant in Vance to replace textile jobs in their state. The North Carolina congressional delegation, Governor and NCGA were aghast at such an outlandish proposal compared to what North Carolina offered.

40,000 Alabamians work in the auto industry today.

Seems like SC knows how to attract business as well as Alabama.

I don’t blame companies shaking down the government, seeing who will bend over backwards more.

I would just want to see all these sweetheart deals made illegal.

Things would settle out then based on the fundamentals of locations, including the tax levels they have towards all, rather than because of the shakedown.

In that case, businesses would leave California, NY, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, higher tax states.

And progressivism would collapse. A win-win for all.

What a nut job!

Oregon has made similar deals with Nike, Intel, and a few others. Liberals tried to raise corporate taxes as some of these deals were starting to run out. Luckily that ballot measure failed, but the first thing each of those companies looked at was moving out of state. Liberals are idiots, incapable of seeing past their bad decisions.

As a side note, the majority of Oregon’s revenue is from individual income taxes. In other words, the employees at these companies who pay their personal income taxes. Corporate taxes don’t even make up 10% of their revenue. When the companies do leave the state, guess what happens to all the revenue being generated by their employees? Poof.

If they’re claiming revenue when they’re giving tax breaks exactly WHERE do these Left Wing voters imagine the revenue is going to come from? It boggles the mind that the rank and file Left cannot realize that ultimately their only purpose to their elites is to be a source of funds and power, and mainly (if not only) for the benefit of the elites.

As has been observed: socialism is terrible to everyone who isn’t running the show, the elites get to have an abundance while everyone else goes without.

Socialism owns the true Robber Barons, both through the force involved and how they benefit only to the extent that others must give up. The old robber barons (certain bankers excluded) first made their fortunes through voluntary commerce.

Not only that but the State doesn’t hold their own government accountable. They have one of the highest income tax rates in the nation and yet every year they have a budget shortfall. They keep talking about implementing a sales tax in addition to their already ridiculous income tax. Where is all the money going?

Teachers they cannot afford to fire (the cost was said to be a cool million to give an incompetent teacher their due process) so they pay them to sit and read magazines according to one fellow.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

No kidding. PERS (Public Employee Retirement System) alone has a $25 Billion shortfall.

What’s the definition of insanity?

More of a hero than our veterans.

A nasty, nasty person.

That possibly can’t be real.

To think a sitting member of Congress would say such a thing. Needs run out of town on a rail. :rage:

There are other concerns, such as the effect it would have on the neighborhoods surrounding it, gentrification, and so forth.

Ah yes the dread raising of property values. The horror.

The gentrification would have been of the people there. Better jobs. High tech skill opportunities. I know that rubs Libs the wrong way. If the people improve their lives, they won’t need Libs. Right?
This was part of the deal that libs hated.

Amazon has also agreed to allocate $5 million for workforce development and to host job training sessions and job fairs at the nearby Queensbridge Houses, although no hiring guarantees were made in the memorandum. Amazon will also build a new school with as many as 600 seats on its campus, along with a “tech startup incubator.”

Your masks are falling off, Libs.

Trump is the biggest critic of amazon of all…:man_shrugging:

Why don’t you get your facts straight? He isn’t against Amazon as a company, he is a critic of the owner of Amazon - Jeff Bezos - who also happens to own the Washington Post and uses the once great newspaper as his personal blog.

(Also - why the hell are you guys resurrecting all of these old threads?)
