Lost in the Fifties- Another Time, Another Place

His name was Russ? I don’t I ever recall calling my father by his first name.

Russ was the bomber navigator. My Dad, I called Dad or his nickname, Moon. Our family doctor called me Half Moon. My father never said the word Jap; he always said Japanese Soldier.

Ahh ok, I was a bit lost in your narrative for awhile there. Moon? What an odd nick name.

The depression, a bald haircut, and the name Moon surfaced & stuck.

I gotta post a picture of my Dad in Burma. Shorts, boots, no shirt, a rag hat; and Thompson slung over his shoulder, Back then that was considered full battle gear. It was the norm. Today it’s like Star Wars.

That might be a good idea.

…and greed is not confined to the ■■■■■

Okay but what about the Holocaust. It was so tragic and sad and now I need to give Israel 50 billion more dollars to fund their self-defense preschool bombings.

Mine was anything but. The only real normalcy I had was my my grandparents but I definitely “get it”.

When you find yourself reduced to this level of debate, much less belief it’s time to reevaluate your life.

My granddad was in the first CB’s Battalion and Retired after Korea.

He was there for the entire Island hopping campaign and for the worst Korea had to offer.

Those were great men doing unbelievable work in totally inhuman conditions. They just saw it as another day at work.

Was LBJ white and a ■■■■ Hmmm?

No.

I think you are missing my tongue and cheek intent with my last comment with the uncanny irony here.

Just wanted to point out that it wasn’t a ■■■ who gave the country the Great society and Affirmative action.

He was just greedy for votes for the Democrat Party. He was already rich…and fixed for life.

Here is a different perspective of the 1950`s.
I grew up in a very conservative farming community and my memories of the 1950´s by no means are romantic. My first glimpse of a Television was through a window at a local hardware store and it was President Truman on vacation in Florida. Here are my misgivings of that era:
(1) Jim Crow Laws and customs where alive and well. The big topic was whether or not someone had one drop of black blood in his veins.
(2) Being a Catholic in a predominately Baptist Area brought on lots of headaches and suspicions. My mother was all the time arguing about the infallibility of the pope.
(3) World War 2 was still being talked about, especially hatred towards the Japs. It was not uncommon to see a sign on a barn door “Hang Your Jap Hide Here”
(4) McCarthyism resulted in mass hallucinations, that is, there is a communist under every bush! You were led to believe that Fats Domino was a Soviet Agent.
(5) Society was regimental. People were snobs in general and if you were not from the correct social order, then you were considered a useful idiot.
These are just some high lights. Life on a rural farm was hard, it was not uncommon to see a bumper sticker “God,Guns and Guts
