Dresden was neither industrially nor militarily important.
Shells were fired at random, at cities and at villages.
On the morning of the attack, the residents were shocked to see the island surrounded by American ships.
Dresden was a legitimate military target which was hit in response to the bombing of London.
The targeting of London was all the justification needed.
Complete BS. The Navy didn’t have the resources to waste shelling cities blindly.
By that point in the war the US had the most precise targeting of Naval gunfire in the world using a combination of radar and observers as well as forward controllers calling in precise targets.

There were two primary reasons for the high civilian casualties. One, the Japanese conscripting them and forcing them to fight, and two, the high suicide rates among the civilian population.

No one can justify such massive deaths and it is regretful that such events happened. I was not there and cannot second guess what field commanders had done. How about the 8 million ■■■■ murdered? It doesn’t have to be justified, it was war and the object was to kill the enemy.
Yes, Navy guns have a max range of around 22 miles plus/minus but they also had to keep the large ships far enough off shore to avoid them being hit by the shore based naval guns and field artillery which cuts their max range inland by over half.
The 155, 10, and 12" Japanese guns had ranges from 12-20 miles.
They had shore based artillery that could even seriously damage or sink our biggest capital ships if they moved too close to the shore.

Most people who are interested with Iwo Jima overlook the naval battle that occurred on Day 2 of the invasion. A small group of Suicide Pilots flew long range zero´s and crashed into the medium aircraft carrier USS Bismark Sea. The carrier sank fairly quick and there were hundreds of survivors and deaths. The USS Bismark Sea would be the last aircraft carrier sunk in WW 2.

Japan was never willing to offer a complete and unconditional surrender at any point in 1945 or prior.
Even after two atomic bombs they still insisted on keeping the Emperor.
Prior to that none of the entreaties they made would even consider ceding back any of the territories they’d cowered and all required their military be left intact.
There was no possibility any of the allied leaders would consider a surrender on those terms.
Watching another documentary on WWII I was reminded of the reason Iwo Jima was so essntial.
It was directly inline with our bombers flying from the Marianas, almost exactly halfway between Tinian and Todyo and it’s three airfields held the largest concentration of fighters in that part of the world in 1945.
Whether we occupied it to use for our own purposes or not it was absolutely essential to deny it as a base for the Japanese fighters.
Their longer range fighters could launch from Iwo and harass the bomber strings all the way to Tokyo then land, rearm and refuel and hit another flight on the return trip which would have been devastating to our strategic bombing plans for Japan. LeMay demanded that the base be completely destroyed or taken from the Japanese otherwise the cost in American pilots, crews, and aircraft was going to be devastating dragging the war out for another year or more.
This is a great documentary overall but the last half hour or so focuses on the Campaign in The Pacific from May of 45 to the end.
