Impeachment is a legal tool to remove an acting president for high crimes and misdemeanors. President Nixon resigned and the impeachment case against him was dropped. Is not the case against Trump MOOT? He is gone, his term expired. What is the law?

Impeachment After Leaving Office
Some legal analysts argue that a president’s impeachment cannot constitutionally continue after the end of the president’s term. (Former Federal Appellate Judge J. Michael Luttig argues it here, law professors Bruce Ackerman and Gerard Magliocca advance the claim here.) The main reason supporting the claim is straight forward: Impeachment is a means to remove a president prior to the next election. Once the president’s term has ended, the raison d’être for impeachment has therefore also ended.
The reality is that this will end up in the SCOTUS.

There is previous law… a sect. of defense was impeached after he left office and there is far more prominent attorneys… law firms and universities agree that the president can be tried in the senate after he left office…and another vote to determine if trumputin can ever run for office again
The argument is pretty simple any president would understand that our country would be at the mercy of any dictator… he could start a coup just before he left office then if he couldn’t be tried for it under the law he would walk free…that can’t stand… it’s a protection for the country in the event we had another crooked president like trump that would try to overthrow our government and stay in office…and if it didn’t work he’d just walks free that isn’t going to happen…no matter who is in the Supreme Cour…no Supreme Court will put the country at the mercy of a future possible dictator…

Never before has a sitting president incited a mob to march on the nations capital building in strength while the full congress is in session or conduct the trial by combat as his lackey suggested at his rally. Many of the attackers have stated that they were doing what Trump wanted them to do and some of their lawyers are arguing that as their defense…
