Jan. 3 , 2024 demoRAT Denver Mayor Mike Johnston stated Sunday that illegal immigration is putting a “huge strain” on the city, joining the likes of other mayors who have spoken on the growing problem of illegal immigration in the country.
Johnston explained that the lack of work authorization that immigrants receive in Denver has been a major contributing factor to the city’s problem. The mayor was also asked about comments he has made in the past, which include that caring for illegal immigrants could impact between 10 to 15% of the city’s budget in 2024.
“ It is unsustainable**,” Johnston said on** Fox News Sunday . “In the current structure, when we have 30 or 40,000 people arriving without work authorization, without federal support, it is going to be a huge strain on cities.”

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has threatened a “Tiananmen Square moment” using tens of thousands of Mile High City residents to prevent President-elect Donald Trump from his plan to deport illegal immigrants.
“More than us having [federal agents] stationed at the county line to keep them out, you would have 50,000 Denverites there,” Johnston said to The Denverite on Wednesday.
“It’s like the Tiananmen Square moment, right?” said Johnston, referring to the infamous image of a Chinese student and People’s Liberation Army tank coming face to face in Tiananmen Square in China during the 1989 uprising.
Harboring illegal aliens and trying to protect them from deportation is a felony punishable by 10 years in Prison and a $10,000 fine for EACH offense.
