Polk asked congress for a declaration of war. Many in Congress, and namely Abraham Lincoln opposed it and called it what it was, an illegal land grab. But they were outnumbered and war was declared and the US proceeded to prosecute Polks vision, threatening to push the border all the way to Mexico City if they did not sign the cease fire treaty known as the Guadalupe Hidalgo. Out gunned and overpowered they did. They had had their independence from Spain for just 25 years when Polk incited the war which ended in their loss of half of their country.
