From what I understand, it looks like SBF just reinvented the highly leveraged investment strategy, with the only innovation being the use of crypto.
And, like what happens with highly leveraged investments, if the value of the investment goes down more than a tiny amount, the fund goes bankrupt.

A lot of my visibility into the day-to-day cryptocurrency developments sort of disappeared when the one podcast I listened to (CoinTalk, which was hosted as a side-gig by Jay Caspian Kang and Aaron Lammer for years starting in 2017-2020ish) ended. So I had sort of missed what their view of the rise of FTX was or is.
That said, the type of exchange that FTX was…was what they would half-joking refer to as a “shitcoin” exchange…basically, one that allows all types of trading of any bullshit coins (unlike Coinbase, which has always been pretty judicious about what they allow trading of…though, I’d say even allowing things like BTC and Ethereum forked coins and Litecoin is sort of risky enough as is…)…and so, it was sort of lost on me that MOST of FTXs holdings and growth were coming out of the shitcoin market…I guess I presumed a lot of it was just boring ole BTC and Ethereum…
Nonetheless - there are plenty of shady exchanges like FTX out there. My main point still stands. This is not a new tactic by those willing to defraud investors. Prove me wrong on the facts of the fraud.
